DISCUSSION: Reading Secrets

Book Riot recently did a post on their top reading secrets so I thought I would share a few of mine.

1. I am JUST NOW, at the age of 35, discovering the wonderful world of Harry Potter. WHY DID I NOT READ THIS SERIES SOONER?? Insane. I guess I always scoffed a bit at the thought of a boy wizard. It has only been in the last year that I have gotten into the Fantasy genre, so I thought I would give it a shot. I am so glad I did because I am now OBSESSED. I started the series a week ago and I am now on book six. I have been an awful wife because for the last week. I have barely come up for air.
2. I hated Pride and Prejudice. There, I said it. Usually, I tell people that I thought the book was okay. Why do I lie? The truth is that it bored me to tears and I am surprised I managed to finish it. Why are people so obsessed with Jane Austen??
3. While reading a book on my Kindle, I obsessively check to see how much longer it will take to finish it throughout the entire book. It's like I'm in competition with myself or something. And I keep hoping to read faster and faster to cut the time down. It's a weird little compulsion.
4. I refuse to keep physical copies of my books just for the heck of it. And I don't understand people who have hundreds of books on their shelves just because they look nice. I have limited space and my husband and I have moved quite a few times. If I don't love the book enough to reread it, I get rid of it.

5. 90% of my books are on my Kindle. I have been known to buy physical copies of books I have read just in case of a zombie apocalypse. It could happen. If it does, there is no way I am leaving behind The Book Thief or Where The Sidewalk Ends. Now I'm on the hunt for a hardcover set of Harry Potter, but I am pretty sure I would need a separate bag just for my books at this point. Worth it.

What are a few of your reading secrets? Can you relate to any of these?

  1. I've had to move my books once so far and it definitely inspired me to give some away. I still have lots, though!

    1. pagesunbound, I do know that sometimes it can be hard to get rid of books. Kind of goes against our nature, right? When my husband and I moved overseas, I vowed to get rid of a lot of stuff. I didn't realize how many books I owned that I had read but never planned on reading again. On to Goodwill they went!

  2. I plan on reading (or listening) to Harry Potter for the first time this summer!! I have no idea how I haven't read it before now. I never read Pride and Prejudice so there is that. I also check how long is left in the book, in the chapter, in anything when I am reading on my kindle. I can't stop myself. I don't have a lot of physical copies of books but I will give them away when I am done if I think someone will like them. So I am with you on a lot of these :)

    1. Grace, finally someone else who isn't late to the Harry Potter party. I have a feeling the audio will be amazing!! I am completely obsessed with this series now. I can't wait to see what you think of the audio. Glad you can relate on some of the other things. If there is a physical copy of a book you have but will not read again, there is nothing wrong with spreading the love, right?

  3. I don't understand having lots of books either. I have two bookshelves and I'm overflowing so I need to do a major purge again soon. I don't like the clutter.

    1. Heather, clutter drives me CRAZY!! When my husband and I moved overseas a couple of years ago, I was surprised to see how many books I had that I had read, but knew I would never read again. Goodwill got a lot of books from me, that's for sure.

  4. I felt the same way about the Harry Potter series. I read the first one when it came out and enjoyed it but didn't gobble the rest of the series until just a few years ago. Now I want to get the audio version because I love the narrator.

    1. Kwizgiver, I am kind of happy that I didn't discover this series when it first came out. Now I don't have to wait for the sequels to come out. That would be TORTURE! I bet the audio would be amazing. I may get that at some point.

  5. ooh, I do the same with my kindle!! I am ALWAYS checking...and racing it. XD I sometimes try not to, but pfft, what does it even matter?! If it was a physical book I'd SEE one side getting thicker, the other thinner, so it makes sense that I like to check on the digital version.
Except I am definitely a person who will collect books just for the heck of it. ;D It's a collection for me, and I'm tooootally okay with that. (Although my shelves are STUFFED and I will have to get rid of some books soon. *weeps* Trying not to think about it.)
I only read Harry Potter last year and finished book 7 this year! *HI FIVES* Better late than never!??

    1. Cait, oh you are so right. Since it is a physical copy, it is IMPOSSIBLE to see how much I have left without constantly looking at my time. I have to have a physical representation of all the pages I have read. I am so glad I am not the only one who does that! And I am glad that I am not the only one who has waited FOREVER to read Harry Potter! Seriously. I love it so hard.

  6. I do that, too. I hate keeping books I disliked on my shelves, just b/c they look good or b/c I paid for them. Instead, I give them to someone who will actually enjoy them! Though that rarely happens, b/c I'm careful with the books I'm buying :)

    1. Lola, clutter drives me crazy! I hate them taking up space, ESPECIALLY when I know I will never read them again. As much as I love certain books, I very rarely reread them. Why shouldn't I donate them or something so other people can enjoy them?

  7. I read HP pretty much as they were released but I was already an adult at the time - so my reading experience is probably far different from those that are 20-something (or even 30-something LOL). For many HP is completely tied to their childhood. For me it was a fantastic series but not something I am obsessive about - or even particularly nostalgic. And I do something similar when reading on my Kindle! I constantly check my percentage. No idea why... but I do it constantly! :) Such a fun post, Cynthia!

    1. Tanya, yeah I am 35 years old and am just now discovering them so they are not attached to my childhood either. I am just totally obsessed with how amazing it is.

  8. Welcome to Potter fandom! I adore this series and am rereading via audio (on top of the zillion times I've already read them!). And yes to that weird kindle habit, I do that too. I do keep most of my books though unless I feel like I'll never reread them. I'm sure I won't reread most of what I have anyway but I do love looking at them! :)

    1. Thanks Trish! I need to check out the audio! I bet it's all kinds of amazing.

  9. #3 and #4 - yes! Me too. I continue to love Harry Potter 16 years after I started reading the series in college with my best friend. I've shared it with my now husband and my almost 6 year old son. We just went to Universal for Harry Potter over spring break.

I don't know if I have any reading secrets. Fun topic though!

    1. Kate, oh I bet that was so much fun! I want to watch the movies and then go to the WB set in London where several scenes were filmed. :)

  10. #2-I might have you beat. I have never even read Jane Austin!
#3-Yes! I do the same thing. And if I put it down and start off slow I get frustrated when suddenly it says I will take longer to finish.
I am obsessive about reading series books in order. Even murder mysteries or such that do not have to be read in order. My mind just can't relax and go with it.

    1. Jay, I had never read Jane Austen until last year and I felt so guilty. But you aren't missing anything so don't feel too bad. I hate it when my Kindle time increases too. Ahhh. I just want to read it as fast as possibly. Crazy!

  11. Hahahha I love this! So, I have only read the first Harry Potter. And umm I didn't love it. I live in fear that the bookish community will kick me out one day because of this ;) I do NOT get the Jane Austen love either. YAWN. I am also in competition with my Kindle! Like WHY? I waste time looking AT the time hahahha.

I am an absolute book hoarder though. #NoRegrets

  13. I tried Jane Austen once and was bored, but I don't advertise it lol. I thought the movie version of Sense and sensibility was good, so the book would work for me right? Um, no. :) And yes I am ALWAYS checking my %. I love this book- am i done yet? lol.

    1. Greg, ha I can see why. There is such a love for Jane Austen and I just don't get it. I feel bad for admitting it because I feel like people will start throwing stones or something.

  14. I have never read Jane Austen. If I am not mistaken, I just checked out a Marvel comic of JA. This may be the only time I will read it LOL.

HP isn't for every one and who cares how long it too you. LOL

I do the same thing while reading on my kindle. I am obsessed with it as well as doing similar while reading a physical book.

    1. Penni, hahahaha. Okay, a comic of Jane Austen MAY be something I would check out too. I am assuming it would be less boring than the books, right? :) True that about Harry Potter. I feel so late to the party, but who cares? Better late than never.

  15. Oh, I totally do that Kindle thing. It's like a disease - I feel compelled to constantly check that little progress bar ... over and over and over again! Oh, and your reference to Where the Sidewalk Ends makes me happy! I just bought ALL of Shel Silverstein's books because my Acting class (at our homeschool co-op) performed his poems. They were super cute!!

    1. Nicole, maybe we should start a support group for the whole obsessively checking your Kindle thing. Judging from the comments on this post, a lot of people have that problem! I love Shel Silverstein so much!! I bought the hardcover anniversary edition of Where the sidewalk ends last year. I had so much fun reading it again.
