I love to cry.
No, really. I do.
Naturally, I love books that make me cry. If you tell me that a book involves a tough subject or death or a lot of emotion, I'm all over it. If you tell me a book is heartbreaking, I'm in. If you tell me that a book will destroy me, I rush to get it.
Maybe it's because it feels cathartic or something. Nothing feels better than a good cry. Nothing. (Okay, maybe my bed feels better than a good cry, but you know what I mean.)
Because of my love of books that make me ugly cry, on the very rare occasion in which I desire a book that is light or fluffy, I have almost no books on my Kindle that fit that description. And really, just about the only occasion that makes me seek lighter books out is when I will be reading in public, like an airplane (I have cried over a book on an airplane before. Not pretty.)
Here are just a few of the books that have made me ugly cry.
Note: I have a Goodreads shelf for books that made me cry and one for books that made me laugh. I probably don't have to tell you which one is longer.
Tell me: do you like books that make you cry? What is your favorite "must read because it's so heartbreaking" book?
Oh I love books that make me cry - especially an ugly cry. I loved ATBP and Me Before You. Sobbed for both of those. Bright Side and The Nightingale are two I love and totally killed me. The Choices We Make was a recent one that had me crying a lot too. Great topic and I am right there with you!!
ReplyDeleteGrace, oh YES to the Nightingale!! I actually had a cold while reading that one, so I blamed my tears on that. But I was sobbing like a baby. I have not read The Choices we Make. I may have to put that one on my TBR, especially if it makes you cry.
DeleteI don't actually have too many of those. Most recently, I'd have to say Baby Doll. Twin sisters, kidnapping and my heart just broke and I started tearing up in the middle of a doctor's office!
ReplyDeleteVerushka, oh that one does sound heartbreaking. I need to check that one out!
DeleteI love books that make me cry! I cried my heart out with All The Bright Places, Me Before You and The Book Thief too and they are some of my all-time favorites. That said, I do need to switch them up with light and fluffy books regularly to be able to keep going :)
ReplyDeleteLindsey, I know, I know. Sometimes I feel that way too, but then I try to find one and I have none! I need to get a few more of those lighter reads on my Kindle so I can have a little break from all the sadness.
DeleteI just recently added a "made me cry" shelf on Goodreads. I tear up a lot when reading, but not full-on cry, so this shelf is for the ones that really make me fall apart. Right now the shelf has: All The Bright Places, Orbiting Jupiter, Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant? (which is also on my made-me-laugh shelf), and The Knife of Never Letting Go. Anne of Green Gables and Charlotte's Web are both on there too, for making me cry as a kid (and laugh, of course!).
ReplyDeleteWendy, I am the same way! I am an "easy crier," so there are a LOT of books where I start to tear up. But my "made me cry" Goodreads shelf is for ones that left me sobbing and heartbroken. Those are some great books on your list. The Knife of Never Letting Go was so heartbreaking. I loved that one so much. I need to check out a few others on your list because I hadn't heard of them. Thanks!
DeleteI sobbed hysterically while reading The Book Thief and Me Before You, so I can definitely empathize! I typically don't specifically seek tear-jerkers because I have to be in the right mood for them, but I really enjoyed Delirium when I read it a few years ago and cried like a baby.
ReplyDeleteOlivia, I remember Delirium! It has been a while since I've read that one and I'm sure I cried because I cry at EVERYTHING; I just don't remember. Ha
DeleteALL of these books made me cry! Except Me Before You because I haven't read it yet. But yeah, I love reading sad books because they are more likely going to make me FEEL EMOTIONS, and more often than once that won't happen with a happy fluffy book. So would I rather suffer than feel nothing? Yes. :)
ReplyDeleteValerie, you need to read Me Before You!! I actually read that one LONG before all the hype and before it was made into a movie, so I really didn't know what to expect from the premise. I had no idea it would turn into a tearjerker.
DeleteI rarely cry and hate books that want to force me to cry but try too hard. Most fail on me, but some sneak up on me and I freaking love them. Salt to the Sea is one of them :)

Nereyda, I know what you mean about books that try too hard to make me cry. Most of them have comparisons to The Fault in our Stars or something. I hate that. The emotions should just come naturally.
DeleteI am absolutely right there with you. LOVE a book that makes me cry. If it makes me sob, all the better. I haven't read The Book Thief yet (I know - it's a travesty), but I've read the other four. For some reason The Memory Book just didn't do it for me, but I definitely cried during the others!

Nicole, oh you should really read The Book Thief! I just read it for the first time last ear and I absolutely fell in love with it. And thanks for letting me know about the link on the discussion page. I will change that!
