DISCUSSION: How far would you go to read?

I love reading.
Let's file that little piece of information under the heading, "Duh."

I will literally read anytime, anywhere under any circumstances.
One such time actually caused me to have a lingering fear of fire. I was a teenager and the power is out. I don't remember what book I was reading, but I remember that I was at a really good part and did not want to stop. I was not going to let a little power outage stopped me. My mom had lit some candles and I was holding one next to me so I could see my book. I must have been holding the candle a little too close to my head because suddenly, my hair was on fire.
Luckily, my stepfather noticed quicker than I did and he was able to put it out pretty quickly. But now, I am scared of fire. And candles. I try to keep myself a safe distance from all flames. That's probably a good thing anyway, right?
I also insist on reading when I have a migraine. My husband told me other day NOT to read because my head was really hurting and it would hurt my eyes. But what did I do the second he turned his back? Yep, picked up my book.
There has been one time where I just was not able to read and that was on a flight home from Italy to the United States. We were going through some pretty bad turbulence. And I mean bad. The plane was shaking and there were a couple of times where the plane actually dipped and it felt like we were in free fall for a second and like we were going to crash. That has been the one and only time where the circumstances were just too extreme for me to read.
I guess feeling like I am going to die is a real mood killer.

So can you read anytime and anywhere? Do you read while you are sick? Any fun stories about the lengths you would go to in order to read a book?

  2. Omg this is hilarious and wonderful!😂 YOU ARE THE GOALS OF DEDICATION! I'm actually a total wimp and I basically only read when I'm alone and it's quiet. Else I can't concentrate?? I don't even read much when I go out (unless I'm like sitting in a waiting room for 938 hours, ugh) because I can't focus. I do remember, however, wanting to read while I was camping (I was like 12 I think) and my sister was just chatting away and wouldn't shut up. So I undid the slats of her bunkbed.😂😂 It didn't exactly make her shut up...but it's amazing what reading will spur you to do...

    1. Cait, my husband is totally jealous of how I can read anywhere. He can ONLY read when we're in bed or not watching TV at least because he needs quiet too. But I can read while the TV is on and still know what's going on. Ha. That story about your sister is hilarious! I don't mind the TV on when I am reading, but my husband knows better than to talk to me. I probably would have done the same thing to your sister's bed. That is pretty awesome.

  3. You've definitely had some interesting experiences when it comes to dedication to reading, Cynthia! :D I mostly put down a book if things get bad just because I want to be alert if anyone needs help and I can't pay attention if I'm focused on a book! But if it's turbulence in an airplane, I'll just keep reading. Reading keeps me calm and keeps my mood stable so if I'm reading, I'm both getting closer to knowing the ending, and also remaining calm and collected!

    1. Laura, I have tried so many times to read while going through turbulence, but it's just so hard to focus. In my head, I know that it's nothing serious and it will pass, but I still get so nervous.

  4. Ha, it sounds like reading is a comfort for you. I need quiet and calm surroundings to read in peace, which is why I mostly read at night or when I'm alone. Also explains why I don't read as many books as other bloggers...

    1. Nereyda, yeah I get that. That is exactly how my husband is. I can sit here and read while he watches TV, but he can only read when it's quiet, like at night.

  5. One of the things I miss most from my childhood (besides having other people take care of me instead of the other way around!) is my ability to read in moving vehicles. I could read in the backseat for hours up until I was in my early 20s. Now I start getting queasy if I have to do so much as check directions while driving. And now that I think of it, I don't think I read when I'm really sick as much as I did when I was a kid. I get too sleepy now!

    1. Wendy, oh man I would hate if I couldn't read in cars! My husband and I have taken plenty of road trips and I do my share of reading during them. I guess I can read through just about anything. :)

  6. Bwhahaha this is TOO funny! I am the same exact way. No day feels complete unless I have read, so I feel you. There have been a few times I haven't and I just don't feel... right. Even with a migraine, I usually force a chapter or two, just so I read something! I know things are REALLY bad if I can't read. True story, when I was pregnant with my daughter, I could NOT read. Every time I even LOOKED at a book, it made me ill. I have NO idea why, and it didn't happen with my son (I created my blog the day before he was born, and read in the hospital after my c-section bwhah) so I can't explain it, but I physically could not read. Dark days, those were. Love this post, sorry about your hair fire ;)

    1. Shannon, oh man not being able to read would be a TERRIBLE side effect of pregnancy. I could handle all the nausea and weight gain . . . but not being able to read? Dark days indeed. :)

  7. I'm so glad you survived your book! I will read in almost any circumstance. And now that I have audiobooks too, I can read even when I'm too sick to crack open a book!

    1. Nicole, I am so envious of your ability to read audiobooks! Personally, I can't really focus on listening to a book. I guess I take in information better when I can see it. I would get so much more reading done if I could listen too. :)
